The European Union has set up a new task force to counter cybercrime throughout Europe. The National Crime Agency announced that the new EU cybercrime organization, called The Joint Cybercrime Action Taskforce (J-CAT), will enter a trial period this September and begin to counter online credit card fraud, identity theft, and other crimes.

Who is Involved in J-CAT?

The new task force is mainly headed up by UK officials from the National Crime Agency. However, British officials will be joined by staff from the EC3, FBI, and Germany's Federal Criminal Police Office. According to The Paypers, the team will work to prevent cross-border cybercrime in Europe, and will mainly target botnets, banking Trojans, and the darknet.

How to Stop EU Cybercrime

Stopping the recent rise in cybercrime throughout Europe will be challenging, but if government bodies and merchants work together, they can stop it before it even happens. Most of EU cybercrime is online credit card fraud, with many hackers and large fraud rings taking advantage of online marketplaces to exploit payment data. Online credit card fraud by hacking into a merchant's online database, a procedure called a data breach. If an e-commerce merchant has weak or little security measures on their website, someone can gain access to their database in a matter of minutes. From there, they can steal consumer credit card numbers and other information to commit cybercrimes with.

How to Protect Your Merchants

If you're a merchant based in Europe, J-CAT will help protect your merchants in a limited capacity. The rest is up to you. All merchants should be familiar with the latest in website security, including PCI compliance, SSL certificates, and secure payment pages. Additionally, plan for the worst-case scenario and coordinate with your bank and other organizations in case you are subjected to a cybercrime.
