FA to Impose Blanket Ban on Betting
The Football Association (FA) of England has proposed a blanket ban on betting in football that is to go before the FA shareholders on May 21. If approved by the FA shareholders, the ban would take effect next season and would prohibit players, managers and all team staff through eight tiers of English football from betting on matches, competition or related matter worldwide.
FA Blanket Ban to Curb Corruption in Football
The FA’s proposed blanket ban on betting on football matches is a further step to warding off corruption such as match-fixing. The FA is also hopeful the legislation will curb players from accumulating high debts, which would make them a desirable target for match fixers. Additionally, under the ban, players would be prohibited from personally endorsing betting companies. Teams, however, would still be able to use betting operations as jersey sponsors.
Currently, there are three Premiership teams sponsored by betting companies: Aston Villa (Dafabet), Fulham (Marathonbet) and Stoke City (Bet 365).
FA Blanket Ban on Betting the Result of Players’ Misconduct
The FA’s blanket ban on betting in football brings to mind the Pete Rose scandal in 1989, when the former slugger/manager admitted he had bet on Major League Baseball games. Rose was subsequently handed a life-long ban from the sport by MLB Commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti which included exclusion from the Baseball Hall of Fame, prior to which Rose was a lock.
The FA has had its own similar scandals, three of which in the last year alone. Last summer, Tottenham Hotspur winger Andros Townsend was handed a four-month suspension and $28,000 fine by the FA for a “breach of FA betting rules” for professional footballers. Stoke City striker Cameron Jerome admitted last summer of betting on Premiership matches, and was fined $69,171 (50,000 GBP). Newcastle midfielder Dan Gosling was handed a $41,501 (30,000 GBP) fine for similar conduct.
